Current I
Current I is part of a series that captures the flow and movement of our oceans and what lies beneath the surface. The work was originally inspired by ocean jasper specimens in the Natural History Museum, Oxford. The hand-carved carved channels in this piece are based on mapped global current pathways. The carved surface echoes geological forms in motion.
This series explores how unseen systems - tides, circulation, turbulence - can be made felt through physical surface. The carving process is guided by this sense of flow. Jesmonite was chosen for its ability to hold fine detail while carrying a calm, stone-like presence.
Sitting directly on its plinth, Current I becomes a contained world - an object that invites close, slow looking. It is not a literal representation, but a way of holding part of the ocean’s movement in solid form. Intended to function as living room art as much as sculpture, the piece sits comfortably within a domestic interior while retaining the presence and contemplation of a gallery work.
Although primarily a bespoke furniture maker, my practice often moves between utility and sculpture. Works such as Current I sit alongside custom furniture commissions, sharing the same attention to material behaviour, tactility, and the way objects interact with light and space. Whether approached as Jesmonite art or sculptural furniture-adjacent work, the piece reflects an ongoing interest in form that favours movement, asymmetry, and quiet complexity.
