Coral I Organic Bespoke Furniture
I am drawn to organic forms, and with this piece, I set out to explore how those forms might be reimagined in wood. The concept began with a vivid red coral sketch, but I couldn’t in good conscience replicate its brilliance; corals today are far more often bleached than bright.
This sculptural table expresses that contrast. The base is carved from scyamore, hand-textured and then bleached to recall the skeletal remains of our coral reefs. The tabletop, in charred ash, evokes scorched landscapes, symbolising the wildfires that are also increasingly shaping our world. Together, they reflect two crises above and below the surface: a piece of furniture that reflects on environmental loss.
Made entirely by hand, it embodies my approach as a bespoke furniture maker - crafting bespoke, one-of-a-kind furniture that manipulates the materials that I am working with into new and exciting forms. The interplay of light with surface is also very important to what I do with the texturing and this piece is designed with up-lighting in mind.
