Coral I Organic Modern Furniture
I am drawn to organic forms, and with this piece, I set out to explore how those forms might be reimagined in wood. The concept began with a vivid red coral sketch, but I couldn’t in good conscience replicate its brilliance—corals today are far more often bleached than bright.
This sculptural table expresses that contrast. The base is carved from bleached, textured sycamore, recalling the skeletal remains of coral reefs. The tabletop, in charred ash, evokes scorched landscapes—symbolising the wildfires that increasingly shape our world. Together, they reflect two crises above and below the surface: a quiet, tactile meditation on environmental loss.
As a piece of organic modern furniture, it’s both functional and expressive. Made entirely by hand, it embodies my approach as a bespoke furniture maker—crafting custom made furniture that responds to material, meaning, and form. It stands equally as bespoke living room furniture and as a sculptural prompt: a reminder that the natural world is shaped by our choices.
