Tarrant I Bespoke living room furniture
This suite of bespoke living room furniture was commissioned for a smart riverside flat in London and completed just in time for Christmas. The brief was to create a small collection of modern, understated pieces that would complement the clean architecture of the interior while responding sensitively to both the layout of the space and the client’s everyday habits.
The central piece is a solid oak coffee table, measuring 90cm × 1.46m × 40cm high, with an integrated drawer designed to store games discreetly while maintaining a calm, uncluttered surface. Its low, elongated proportions give it a relaxed presence within the room, allowing it to function as a practical focal point without dominating the space. The reeding around the outside of the coffee table was included to match an existing piece the client already owned and provide continuity between the different spaces in the flat. Accompanying this is a slim sofa table, made to perfectly fit over the arm of the client’s existing sofa and standing 65cm high. Designed specifically for resting a cup of coffee or a book, it provides a small but deliberate moment of convenience whilst remaining small and elegant when not in use.
Completing the set is a low side table, standing at just 70cm high, intentionally designed so as not to interrupt the open views across the river beyond. This piece became a place for displaying cherished photographs, quietly anchoring the seating area while allowing light and sightlines to remain uninterrupted. The client responded so positively to this piece that they immediately commissioned a second, larger version, increasing the height to 92cm to go against another wall, which speaks to both the adaptability of bespoke furniture and the success of the original design.
All three pieces were made from solid oak, chosen for its strength, warmth, and ability to hold rounded edges throughout. The gentle curves lend the furniture a tactile, approachable quality, while the timber was stained to carefully match existing pieces already owned by the client, allowing the new work to feel fully integrated rather than newly introduced.
Designed as a cohesive set, this custom made furniture is tailored precisely to its setting, with modern, sleek forms that sit comfortably within the interior while contributing a quiet sense of refinement. As with much of my bespoke furniture, the intention was to create objects that balance function and form, working equally as everyday furniture and as subtle living room art that rewards close attention without demanding it.
