Resonance I Vinyl Record Storage

This bespoke HiFi cabinet was commissioned to house a high-end sound system from the 1970s. The vintage speakers were over 50 years old — and I wanted this record player cabinet to last just as long, if not longer. Built to last a lifetime and beyond, it’s a piece of handmade furniture that prioritises both acoustic performance and aesthetic quality. I have discussed these and other attributes in more detail in my linked article.

The entire cabinet is crafted from solid utile, a dense hardwood chosen for its strength, stability and rich tone. Designed with maximum rigidity in mind, it helps minimise resonance and vibration that can interfere with analogue sound — an essential consideration for any custom HiFi unit or vinyl record storage cabinet. The continuous grain flows seamlessly over the top and sides, giving it a clean, modern profile with a strong sculptural presence.

Structurally, the piece relies on precise joinery: decorative mitred dovetails at the corners and sliding dovetails along the internal frame, which help eliminate movement across the wide spans of timber. This makes the cabinet incredibly stable — crucial when supporting heavy HiFi components, amplifiers, and turntables.

Finished with natural beeswax, the surface will develop more character over time. The contrasting legs were made from the client’s own wind-felled ash, adding a subtle, personal connection to the piece. Whether used as a vinyl storage cabinet, record player stand or HiFi unit, this piece of furniture is made to be lived with, used daily, and handed down.
