This one-of-a-kind record player stand was commissioned as a refined piece of bespoke furniture, designed to house a full HiFi system while sitting comfortably within a traditionally furnished home. The cabinet is made from solid cherry, with birdseye maple panels and a tambour front that allows the turntable to be concealed when not in use.
A key feature of the piece is the sliding tambour door, formed from birdseye maple to match the panels. This allows the record player to be completely hidden away when closed, while sliding cleanly out of sight during use. It was an elegant solution to a practical requirement: the client wanted their turntable accessible but protected, particularly from young children. The result is a record player cabinet that shifts easily between open, functional use and a quieter, more contained presence within the room.
The cabinet also incorporates a marquetry panel depicting a magpie resting on a sprig of cherry blossom. The house for which this piece was commissioned takes its name from a magpie in a story, and is surrounded by cherry trees, making this a subtle but highly personal detail. These kinds of references are one of the defining aspects of bespoke furniture: the ability to embed meaning directly into the piece.
A well-designed piece of HiFi furniture begins with the equipment itself. Every system is different: turntables vary in footprint, amplifiers generate different levels of heat, and cabling requirements can quickly become complex. This cabinet was designed around the client’s existing setup, with careful consideration given to access, airflow, and long-term usability.
Unlike standard HiFi stacks, where components are simply placed one above the other, a bespoke record player stand allows each element to be given its own space. This not only improves usability but also presents the system more clearly, allowing each component to be seen and accessed without the clutter of cables or overlapping equipment.
Cable management is built into the structure, with provision for routing and access that keeps the rear of the cabinet functional without compromising the clean lines of the exterior.
Turntables in particular are sensitive to vibration, and even small movements can affect playback. For this reason, rigidity is a central consideration when I design any record player cabinet.
This piece is constructed using solid timber and traditional joinery, providing a stable, well-braced structure that resists movement over time. The use of dense hardwoods such as cherry helps to create a solid base, reducing unwanted resonance and allowing the equipment to perform as intended.
The choice of materials is one of the first considerations when designing bespoke furniture for someone. As well as personal meanings, as in this case, my aim is for the cabinet to sit in harmony with the rest of the room for which it is designed. In this cabinet, cherry was selected for its warmth, workability, and ability to age gracefully over time. In fact, cherry is unusual in that it particularly darkens over time into a lovely rich red colour. I chose birdeye maple to provide contrast, both visually and texturally, with its dense figure catching light across the surface.
Solid wood construction allows the piece to develop character as it is used. Unlike veneered alternatives, the surfaces can be maintained, repaired, and refinished if needed. The cabinet is built with longevity in mind, using the principles of traditional joinery that accommodate natural wood movement.
Although this particular cabinet was a bespoke commission, it represents one approach among many. Each record player stand or HiFi cabinet is designed in response to its setting, its equipment, and its owner, whether that involves:
- Adjustable shelving to accommodate changing equipment
- Additional depth for particular components and cabling
- Integrated vinyl storage sized for different collections
- Removable back panels for access and future upgrades
- Ventilation for heat-generating equipment
If this piece appeals, similar designs can be developed to suit your own requirements, whether that is a compact turntable stand like this one, a larger record player cabinet with integrated vinyl storage, or, conversely, a full wall of vinyl storage with an integrated record player stand.
