The Kelp Cabinet is a blend of bespoke, functional furniture and also a piece of sculptural design. It is created to function as both a modern drinks cabinet and a striking piece of living room art. It is entirely hand-made from black-stained oak, sycamore shelving and the carved Jesmonite front.
The piece was part of a series inspired by my time spent free-diving amongst kelp forests in Cornwall. The Jesmonite surface ripples with these organic patterns that catch light and shadow throughout the day. This striking textured panel is framed by the contrasting oak to produce a drinks cabinet with a bold presence. It would be well suited to a more contemporary interior.
The sycamore shelving is aligned to the cabinet doors so that as these open the shelves are seamlessly revealed. The proportions make it ideal as a small drinks cabinet: sized to hold a curated selection of bottles and glasses. The doors sit on synchronous runners that allow both doors to open smoothly in unison so pulling on one side will cause the other to open simultaneously - a satisfying detail that highlights the level of craftsmanship. It also features a hidden drawer at the bottom to store a few smaller items such as a corkscrew, coasters or a cigar cutter.
As with all of my work, this piece reflects a commitment to bespoke furniture that combines material innovation with fine woodworking. Using Jesmonite in functional furniture is something I will continue to explore as it offers some unique and novel possibilities.
Perfect as a living room drinks cabinet, this Kelp Cabinet is designed for those who value both craft and originality in their home.
